According to a recent email from Upper School Director Meredith Godley, students can expect to wear their prom dresses at a 2020 prom.

Friday, March 20, Godley sent an email to the Upper School with updates on the fate of prom. “Mr. Miller has been working to reschedule the prom, and we have a tentative date at the end of the school year. We will provide more details as they are solidified,” wrote Godley.

Each year the junior class is responsible for planning the event, and the students on the prom committee look forward to their hard work coming to fruition.

“The prom committee has been working really hard these past few months to get everything in order for the original prom date of April 17. However, given recent news, anything is possible, and there could be various situations that can occur,” said prom committee member Priya Shah ’21.

Shah said, “Ms. LuBrant, the head of the prom committee, has assured [them] that they will try not to take any extreme measures, like cancelling prom, if it is not necessary.”

In addition to students and faculty planning the event, other community members have raised concerns. Hannah Wilson ’21 has been planning on attending prom, but she said, “I think prom is going to be canceled because the CDC has asked for there to be no gatherings of more than 50 people for the next eight weeks.” Luckily, she is optimistic about the situation: “I have bought a dress, but [if prom is cancelled] I can just wear it next year.”

Following the recent updates from Godley’s email, students can expect to wear their prom dresses at a 2020 prom.

Unfortunately, seniors are unable to possess the same mindset as Wilson of using a dress they purchase for a future prom.

Senior Jasmine Phillips decided to take her decision of whether or not to buy a prom dress public by creating an Instagram poll.

“My poll ended with 45% yes and 55% no (85 voters total). Many people also commented saying that they want prom to still happen but feel as though it’s unlikely due to the Coronavirus. For that reason, I feel like I should not buy a dress. Lots of people also said that they hope it gets rescheduled, but until any news comes out, I’m going to hold off on buying a dress,” said Phillips.

The recent email from Godley is keeping the students hopeful, but there is still much uncertainty for prom 2020.
