Day one of Spirit Week 2022 kicked off with the Slimy Fish Toss. Eight pairs of students were split into two groups of four to determine who would give their team an early lead in the competition.

In Group A, Julia Tourtellotte ’23 and Emma Vernick ’23 beat out sophomores Charlotte Nesevich ’25 and Maya DeAndrea ’25 for first place. DeAndrea said, “The sliminess of the fish wasn’t the problem; the toughest part was being able to throw it long distances.”

Senior pair Aadit Pande ’23 and Derrick Phillips ’23 took first place for Group B. The ninth grade and the sophomores tied for third place. Matt Schlotterbeck ’25 said he “didn’t anticipate the fish to be so slimy and tough to catch.” In the final round for Group B, there was some controversy surrounding a questionable catch from juniors Matt Chen ’24 and Dhru Ponnamaneni ’24 that would have extended the game. Ponnamaneni said, “We feel robbed. Matt [Chen] clearly caught the fish.”

The Spirit Week competition will continue Tuesday, October 18 with Quiz Bowl.
