MFS Sports Teams Prepare for the Winter Season By Jack Cranmer '25

Boys’ Fencing:

The Boys’ Fencing team is coming off a 2-7 record from last season, in which they won two of their final four meets. The team lost many seniors and is looking to build this season through their underclassmen. The foil team led the Foxes last year, going 37-53.  Current juniors, Maxwell Wang ’25, Robert Li ’25, and Andrew Zhou ’25 are looking forward to leading the team this season. Li acknowledges the loss of the seniors while looking forward to developing the team’s young talent: “Although a lot of seniors graduated last year, we have a lot of incoming freshmen who are really talented, and I think it’s going to make the team a lot better.” This year, the team has six home meets, and their season will conclude with the state tournament in mid-February.

The Girls’ Fencing team is coming off a 2-8 season where they had wins over Hun and West Windsor- Plainsboro South. This year, the team is led by three standout players: Tara Esposito ’24 in sabre, Sarah Huynh ’25 in foil, and Jewell Jacobs ’24 in épée. Huynh said that she is looking forward to the upcoming season to improve both personally and as a team: “This year I am going to be helping all of the new fencers. I’m also looking forward to improving on my scores from last year and extending my winning streak.” Both girls’ and boys’ fencing are also now starting with a new coaching academy, the Fencing Academy of Philadelphia.  Huynh is very excited about the decision and said, “Hopefully our new coach will help us learn new skills.”  The team has five home meets throughout the season.

Boys’ Swimming:

The Boys’ Swimming team is coming off an 0-8-1 season, where their lone tie came against Hun. Aarav Shah ’25, the lone member of last year’s team, excelled throughout the year.  Shah accounted for many top-three finishes across different strokes and medleys. This year, the team is adding many new freshmen and will have a full team ready to compete. Regarding the upcoming season, Shah noted, “This year we will have a full relay and a promising young team. We are facing much stiffer competition than before, but we hope that we will be able to improve this season and win a few meets.”  Unfortunately, due to injuries, Shah will not be able to participate in meets throughout the 23-24 season.  While the team does not have any meets on campus, their home meets take place at the Kroc Center in Camden.

Girls’ Swimming:

The Girls’ Swimming team finished with a record of 4-3.  This was the second year in a row that they have finished above .500.  With the switch to the Burlington County Scholastic League, the girls’ team will have more opportunities to swim against local teams. Co-captain Julia Brown ’24 stated that the new league will help the team get better: “I think we have a really good chance to win meets in the new league, and I’m really excited for the new opportunities that it will bring.” The team also has a bigger team than previous seasons, welcoming in many new freshmen.  Like the boys’ team, the girls’ team will host their home meets at the Kroc Center in Camden.

Boys’ Basketball:

The Boys’ Basketball team is looking to build up from their 1-23 record last season.  This season, the team has a lot of exciting young players who are looking to make their mark. Zakariah Bah ’25 was one of the leading scorers on the team last year. Now as an upperclassman, he is looking to lead the freshmen and sophomores. Bah said, “I’m looking to go at least .500 this year. The league we are playing in now is going to be much easier, but we can’t step off the gas.  This season is looking very promising.”

The Girls’ Basketball team is looking for a big rebound following their 4-17 record last season. A key part of this potential comeback will be the shift to the BCSL. Forward Anna Thompson ’25 shared, “I think with the new league, we definitely have more opportunities to win more games.” The team is led by senior Sophia Rutherford ’24 and junior Mikelle Smith ’25, who scored 141 and 112 points respectively last season. The girls’ season kicks off at home vs. Riverside on December 14.
