On Monday, October 18th, students and faculty came into school ready to begin another MFS Spirit Week. After last year’s Covid-ridden spirit week, the school returned to some of its old traditions. On Monday, students competed in two events; Slimy Fish Toss and Jello Eating, which returned this year.

After the Slimy Fish Toss was finished, students headed over to their grade’s designated tables. The jello eaters got ready at their table, surrounded by motivational chants from classmates. Participants were allowed to choose one classmate who would stand beside them and act as a coach throughout the event.

Teachers passed out the jello containers, and Mr. Miller reminded students of the rules before counting down the commencement of the event.

After lots of encouraging words from his classmates, Nick Saccomanno, the participant representing the 12th grade, finished first.

Ava Parker ’22 said she was feeling excited: “I think this is going to set the stage for how the rest of the week will go … I think the seniors will take the dub.”

Grace Ward-Gallagher ’24 finished second, representing the 10th grade. Grace was not feeling well after the event and only had one way to sum up the experience: “I almost threw up.” This was the sophomore’s first year experiencing the jello eating event because it was not an event last Spirit Week.

Coming in third was the class of ’25. Brady Kim represented the 9th grade in this competition.

Finishing in last place was the class of ’23. Aidan Short, the 11th grade competitor, said he was not a fan of the jello flavor: “It tasted like moldy cough syrup.”
